Joint Statement on October 2 Court Hearing

October 8, 2026

The Chiefs of Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation have released a joint statement following the October 2 court hearing concerning the Saugeen Ojibway Nation Treaty claim.

We know that many community members have questions about the decision to leave the courtroom and what this means for the case. The statement provides more information about why the decision was made and confirms that the court proceedings are continuing. Saugeen Ojibway Nation remains committed to seeking the return of land and fair compensation for the Crown's broken Treaty promise.

Joint Council will also be organizing a community meeting where Members can hear directly from leadership, ask questions and learn more about the next steps. A date has not yet been confirmed, and further information will be shared as it becomes available.
